Consider Jason H., a client of ours who before taking on BIA coaching didn’t take a vacation for seven (7) years, and he was tethered to his work and missing out on valuable family time due to his constant need to stay connected. As part of his coaching was to experience delegation in action and get out of his head, we set up a game plan for his needs and we coached him through it. He successfully went on a two week vacation, and for the first 4 days he checked his phone three times per day. For the next 10 days, guess how many times he checked his phone for work… Once on a Friday! He went from the incessant need to stay connected and never leave his office, to leaving his office AND having his business operate successfully through the power of delegation and team empowerment. He enjoyed his family time at the local theme park and spent several days connecting with his family and not his work. He’s a whole new man!

1. If it can be eliminated, DO NOT delegate it:
It is as simple as it sounds: if you can eliminate the task/duty altogether, then do so. Tips for evaluating if you can eliminate it: client/internal impact is low, and the task/duty is not necessary to achieve the desired outcome, “this is the way we’ve always done it,” and it seems like extra B.S. work, and I don’t even know why I am doing this task/duty. If either of these three resonates with you, put the task/duty on the chopping block to possibly eliminate it.
2. Identify Your Strengths:
Begin by identifying your strengths and weaknesses. What tasks can only you handle, and where could your team step in? Knowing your strengths allows you to delegate tasks that align with your expertise strategically. Know when to say no to yourself! You are likely the only one negotiating whether to do this work or not.
3. Build Trust and build in a feedback loop:
Trust is the cornerstone of effective delegation. Assemble a team you can trust and communicate clearly. Provide the necessary resources and guidance, but also allow room for autonomy. Trust cultivates a sense of responsibility and accountability. Build in feedback loops with your delegated tasks/duties, and STOP micromanaging. Accountability through self-reporting builds trust and moves the driving force from extrinsic to intrinsic.
4. Prioritize Tasks:
Not all tasks are created equal. Prioritize them based on their impact on business goals. Delegate tasks that, while essential, don’t demand your unique skills. This ensures that your time is spent where it matters most.
